By train
The Saxon-Franconian trunk line between Nuremberg, Bayreuth, Hof, Plauen, Zwickau, Chemnitz, Dresden/Zwickau and Leipzig is currently undergoing considerable renovation to prepare for the introduction of tilting trains. Plans are in place to make the line more competitive with average speeds of 100 km/h and better links between local and national services.
Chemnitz Model
The “Chemnitz Model” is a rail transport system unlike any other found in Germany today. The rails for the interregional main line trains and the local tram network are being made the same width so that each is compatible with the other. Some of the project has already been completed, including the connection with Stollberg via the City-Bahn rail network, and the connection to the tram network at the central station.
