Chemnitz Art Collections

The 60,000 exhibits in the Chemnitz Art Collections are housed in Richard Möbius’ King Albert Museum on Theaterplatz, which opened in 1909. The museum is home to the world’s second largest collection of works by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Gunzenhauser Museum

Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser, a passionate lover of the arts and gallery owner, donated a total of 2,459 works by some 270 artists to the city. These include one of the world’s largest bodies of work by Otto Dix (290 pieces) and its third largest Alexej von Jawlensky collection.

Henry van de Velde Museum in the Villa Esche

The Villa Esche was designed by Belgian artist Henry van de Velde and is one of the most famous architectural monuments in Europe. It is also considered one of the most impressive buildings in Chemnitz.

State Museum for Archaeology Chemnitz

The State Museum for Archaeology Chemnitz (SMAC) opened in Chemnitz city centre on 16 May 2014. It is housed in the fully restored and converted Schocken department store, a world-famous, iconic building designed by classical modern architect Erich Mendelsohn.

Schloßberg Museum

Museum of Natural History

The Museum of Natural History is the oldest museum in the city and houses the largest collection of historical artefacts in Chemnitz – impressive in both their number and their diversity. They include everything from petrified trees, minerals, crystals and rocks from around the globe to historical entomological collections, valuable herbariums and more.

Wasserschloß Klaffenbach

Set against an idyllic backdrop in the southern outskirts of Chemnitz, the Wasserschloß Klaffenbach captivates its visitors from the moment they set eyes on it. The beautiful renaissance castle was built in the 16th century. Its complex of castle buildings, a hotel, restaurant and small craft shops unfold along the Würschnitz river.

New Saxon Gallery

The New Saxon Gallery is a museum of contemporary art funded by the Neue Chemnitzer Kunsthütte association. The collection predominately focuses on artists from Saxony and includes more than 10,000 works dating from 1945 and later.
