[Translate to Englisch:] Schönherr-Jubiläums-Jahr 2017
On 22 February 2017, Chemnitz will be celebrating the 200th birthday of Louis Ferdinand Schönherr. Schönherr invented the mechanical cloth weaving loom with his brother here in Saxony, a development which meant that the cloth and wool industry no longer had to rely on imports from England.
He received high praise and awards for his machines at international exhibitions, and his looms were still considered the best in the sector until around 1880. The company was well-respected across the globe and one of the largest companies of its kind in the region. It did much to establish Chemnitz’s reputation as a centre for mechanical engineering.
Today, the Schönherr factory is not only the oldest industrial site in the city, but is also one of the most beautiful renovated buildings in Chemnitz and beyond.
Alongside the annual Industrial Heritage Days in 2017, Chemnitz will also be celebrating Schönherr’s 200th birthday with a series of events scheduled to take place throughout the year.
You can get a taster of the celebrations to come during the 7thIndustrial Heritage Days over the weekend of 23 to 25 September 2016. Previous events have drawn in crowds of up to 30,000 visitors.
