Industrial heritage in Chemnitz
Chemnitz has been amongst the fastest growing economies in Germany for many years. But it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that the city’s love of culture and the arts really started to grow. Successful residents began to work with artists, architects and designers to invest in the long term look and feel of the city. As Chemnitz’s economy continued to grow, it was able to withstand all political and societal changes and care for, protect and develop its unique culture.
You can find traces of Chemnitz’s industrial history all over the city: in stunning villas, the Gründerzeit districts, museums, the Opera House, public baths, educational institutions and, of course, in the many former factories that have been converted into cultural facilities, restaurants, lofts and offices. The city’s cultural experience still reflects this first blossoming of development today.
